Imam `Ali ibn al-Husain Sayyid as-Sajjidin (prayers be upon him) associated from his father from his grandfather the Prophet of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his household) that this supplication was taught by the Angel Jibra’il (prayers be upon him) to the Prophet (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) during one of many battles. Imam Husain ibn Ali (as) mentioned, “My father Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) had bequeathed to me that I should memorise and defend this supplication and write it on his Kafan (burial shroud) and that I should train it to my family and encourage them to learn it as it contains 1,000 names of Allah and inside these names is the Greatest Name of Allah (Ism-e-Azam).
